Introduction - Hazrat Khwaja Shamsuddin Azeemi
Khwaja Shamsuddin Azeemi, Patriarch of Azeemi Sufi Order, is a Pakistani
scholar of international repute in the field of spiritualism. He presented
spiritualism, in a modern and scientific way bringing it out of mysterious
shadows of myths and lore.In the capacity of Chief-editor, he brings out two monthly magazines, Roohani Digest (Spiritual Digest) and Qalander Shaoor (Neutral Thinking),
which are read by people of all age and religion. He has been appointed as Associate Professor
in Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, as a token of acknowledgement of his
achievements and contributions towards Sufism and Spiritualism.
On Monday, 17 October 1927, Khwaja Shamsuddin Azeemi was born in Anbaith Pirzadga, a small
district in Saharanpur, India. He belongs to the lineage of Hazrat Abu Ayub
Ansrai, the famous companion and the host of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). At the
time of partition, he migrated to Pakistan and, afterwards, became a spiritual
disciple of His Divine Grace Syed Muhammad Azeem Barkhia, Qalander Baba Aulia.
Being an intellectual personality, he authored more
than 70 books. Most of his books have been translated into other languages
including English, Thai, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Persian, Pashto, and Sindhi.
His books are taught not only in “Qalandar Conscious Academy” but also in
colleges and universities in Pakistan and abroad. Three of his books have been
included in the syllabus of the Salford University, Manchester UK. His book
“Ehsan-o-Tasawaf” has been included in the syllabus of M.A. Islamic Studies at
the Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan-Pakistan.
He penned
down a remarkable book on the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) titled, “Muhammad-ur-Rasool Allah (PBUH)”. In the
first volume of this work, he gave a detailed account of the struggles and
hardships of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) for the cause of Islam. In the second
volume of this work, he explained the Miracles of the Holy Prophet (Peace be
Upon Him) in the light of Spiritual and Physical Sciences. In the third volume,
he explained the underlying meanings of the events of the lives of the
Prophets of God. He also presented an explanatory work for the contents of his
mentor’s Book Loh-o-Qalum (The Pen
and the Scriptrum). All these books
have been translated into English.
Light
and Color Therapy is another field which he has introduced in Pakistan and
abroad in his unique scientific style. His book “Color Therapy” presents, from
theory to practice, a healing method by using Light and Color. This method of
healing is based on his decades of experience in this field. He also guided and
supervised a PhD thesis on “Chromatography” (color Therapy). The International
University of Colombo, Sri Lanka conferred a Ph.D. degree on this work.
His books and teachings
dispel some of long-held notions and misconceptions. One of the misconceptions
was negligible role of women in this field. In his book, “101 Women Sufi
Saints”, he explained at length “gender has nothing to do with spiritualism;
soul is above gender. Woman also has a soul, so, by all means, she can awaken
her spiritual abilities and surpass men even.” Women actively participate in
all the related activities of the esteemed Sufi order Azeemi. Azeemi Sufi women
have been made in-charge of Meditation centers. Under his mentorship, women
acquired self-consciousness and left their mark in spiritualism.
He has been writing columns for various newspapers and
magazines for the past forty-eight years, which cover a variety of spiritual
subjects. He has also appeared in several talk shows, live programs on various
radio and television stations in Pakistan, UAE, UK, Europe, Canada and USA. His
columns “Roohani Daak” (Spiritual
Post) has become a legend through which millions of people have been advised
for their socio-economic, psychological and spiritual problems over the past
thirty years. Hundreds and thousands of people have benefited from the advice
and solutions he has offered to their social, financial, psychological and
health problems. He answered numerous questions on paranormal manifestations
and spiritual phenomena to the satisfaction of curious minds.
In addition to these
literary contributions, he established a chain of more than 70 Meditations
Centers, commonly known as Muraqba Halls, across the length and breadth of Pakistan
and in 26 major cities of other
countries of Europe, America,
Canada, U.A.E, Bahrain,
Thailand, Russia, in Denmark, Holland,
Norway. These Muraqba Halls have been established to teach Spiritual
Sciences and to train those people who could carry the torch of the divine
mission of spreading peace and harmony after enlightening their own souls.
Muraqba Hall is a center operating under Khwaja Shamsuddin Azeemi’s direct
supervision and guidance where the students of spiritual sciences are taught
the art of meditation, spiritual healing, color therapy. Here, they are guided
to serve other human beings without any distinction of caste, color or creed,
as a free service to humanity.
His ingenuine idea of establishing
spiritual workshops is an effort to induce the spirit of research culture in
the field of spiritualism. These workshops have become an effective means to
bringing people of different aptitude and mental inclinations platform to
contemplate upon the formulas of creations.
Distinguished personalities from Pakistan and abroad participate in
these workshops. Zil-e-Ahmad (Chancellor of Sir Syed University, Karachi-Pak),
Dr. Zafar Saeed Saifi (Vice Chancellor of Karachi University, Pakistan), Dr.
Ghulam Mustafa Chaudhri (Vice Chancellor of Bahauddin Zakariya University) are
the few to name.
He founded Qalander
Shaoor Academy (Neutral Thinking Academy) to teach Spiritual Sciences. To encourage reading and learning of inner
knowledge, he has also established more than ninety spiritual libraries
throughout the world. Khwaja Sahmsuddin Azeemi Educational Society has
been established Azeemi Public Higher Secondary School in Surjani Town,
Karachi, to impart education to those who cannot afford it. Aim of this society
is to spread spiritual and modern sciences. Libraries, research centers and
educational institutes for quality education will also be established by this
society.

University (UK); Waltham Stow (UK); Arthur Finley College (UK); King Edward
Medical College (Lahore), Punjab University (Lahore); Karachi University
(Pakistan); Agriculture University (Faisalabad); Pakistan, Lahore Bar Council,
(Lahore), Nishtar Medical College (Multan); Islamic Centre, Peshawar
University; and many other. The Lord Mayor of Waltham Stow presented him with
the shield of Waltham Stow Town, London.
An
MPhil research work has been published by Karachi University, Karachi-Pakistan
on the topic of “Urdu Literature in Khwaja Shamsuddin Azeemi’s Scripts”. The
university also conferred PhD degree to Dr. Waqar Yousaf Azeemi on “Academic,
Social and Spiritual Services of Sufi Order Azeemi: An Overview.” To further
research in this field, Karachi University established a Research Chair,
Qalandar Baba Auliya Chair.
Through
addressing people and providing them with an opportunity of direct counseling, he
is rendering such a service for his fellow beings, which cannot be ignored by any
chance. All these seemingly herculean tasks are motivated by his mission of
enabling mankind to acquaint with its Cherishing Lord. It is possible only after man equips himself
with insight and vision through that sacred knowledge, which is the heritage of
mankind and a legacy of the Prophets of God.
Spiritualism is the
document of these formulas, contemplation and looking within, which can be
studied through meditation. Therefore, he presented meditation as an art and
science of Sufi meditation for acquiring self and God consciousness. His life
and his work speak volumes of his painstaking efforts to synchronize spiritual
and modern education. His efforts
towards scientification and institutionalization will be remembered for times
to come.
Khwaja Shamsuddin Azeemi says,
“The core object of life, for the men and women, is to get
acquainted with the spiritual knowledge; the legacy of the prophets of God for
having a deeper realization of the latent potential of their souls so that they
could get closer to the Lord Creator and man could live a peaceful life."
